Selling Without Selling: The Art of Helping and Communicating Effectively - A Conversation with Eilyn Pinto

In our recent live session, I had the opportunity to speak with Eilyn Pinto, a coach with extensive experience in interpersonal skills and effective communication, certified by the Carlotti Coaching Center, accredited by the International Association of Coaching (IAC). During this enriching conversation, Eilyn shared her insights on how to achieve sales without coming across as the usual pushy salesperson.

How to Sell Without Selling?

Selling without selling is about establishing an emotional and genuine connection with the person, rather than focusing on the product or service. As Eilyn mentioned during the live, “the best salesperson is someone who is truly passionate about what they do,” and this passion naturally reflects in everyday interactions. Even in routine moments, like ordering a coffee or chatting with someone in a store, you can create an emotional bridge that later allows you to present what you offer authentically.

The Art of Selling Is Emotional

Eilyn emphasized that sales are “a purely emotional process” and are deeply tied to our self-concept and worldview. Public speaking and effective communication are key skills that allow you to convey your message with clarity, conviction, and passion. In fact, these skills are necessary not only in sales but in every aspect of life. As she put it, “we’re all selling something, whether it’s an idea, an emotion, or a product."

How to Sell Without Seeming Like a Pushy Salesperson? The A.R.T.E. Acronym

For those wanting to apply the art of selling without selling, Eilyn shared an acronym using the word ARTE, explaining step by step how to execute this strategy.

1. A - Assist: The key to a successful sale is focusing on helping the other person. Your primary goal should be to improve your potential client’s life by providing a real solution to their needs. As Eilyn explained: "Selling without selling means genuinely showing that you have something of value that will improve that person’s life.”

2. R - Relate: Establish an emotional connection. It’s important to create empathy because when the client feels understood, they are more open to hearing your offer. Ask open-ended questions, show interest in the person, and build a relationship before presenting what you offer.

3. T - Transmit trust: Trust is the foundation of any successful business relationship. By showing confidence in what you offer and in yourself, you create a natural opening for the sale. Here, public speaking is essential because good communication ensures your message reaches effectively.

4. E - Engage in active listening: In the sales process, listening is just as important as speaking. By understanding your client’s true needs, you can offer a tailored solution that genuinely solves their problems.

Sales in Everyday Life

One of the most interesting ideas Eilyn shared is that we’re constantly in a process of negotiation, even if we don’t realize it. Whether deciding what to eat with family or which movie to watch, we’re "selling" our idea. This skill of persuasion and effective communication is useful not just in sales but in any context of life. Eilyn explained it brilliantly when she said: “There’s no way not to communicate. We’re always sending a message.”

Public Speaking and Sales: A Powerful Combination

Public speaking is another fundamental tool for selling without selling. Learning to communicate clearly and convey trust is crucial in any area. Eilyn, who is currently a public speaking coach at the Chilean School of Public Speaking, mentioned how this skill is essential not only for those in sales but also for any professional looking to project a solid and trustworthy image.

How to Apply the Art of Selling Without Selling in Your Daily Life

The art of selling without selling is something anyone can apply, regardless of their profession. As Eilyn pointed out, a manager, an entrepreneur, or a student can all benefit from these skills. Every day, we’re “selling” something, whether it’s our personal image, ideas, or products and services.

To succeed, it’s crucial to focus on helping others, building genuine relationships, conveying trust, and actively listening. Applying these principles will not only improve your sales but also strengthen your personal and professional relationships.
